How to use the Engage Africal NLP mobile app
In this guide you will learn how to use the app as a translator, volunteer, and validator
Roles
– Translators/Volunteers record translations from one language to another. This could be text to text translation or text to speech. Translators need to create an account and login on the app in order to be able to translate.
– Validators can approve or disapprove a translation. You also need to be authenticated and be assigned a validator in order to mark a translation.
How to sign up and Login
• From the navigation menu click on ‘Sign Up’. Fill in your information and click on the Submit button. Make sure you use a valid email here so that you can easy reset your password in case you forget it.
• After a successful sign up, you will be redirected to the log in page where you can now login.
You can also tap on ‘I forgot my password’ to reset your password in case you forgot your password.
How to record a translation
• Log into your personal account
• From the navigation menu click on Build the Tech → Translate. This will take you to the page where you can record a translation. This screen has two tabs; the first tab is for text to text translation, and the second is for text to speech translation.
Text to text
• Text to text translation is the first tab on the Translate Screen. A translation requires the source language and the target language. The source language is the first language while the target is
the second. Next, enter the source sentence or word and its translation. The next step is to click the Submit button. Your translation will be submitted!
Text to speech
• The tab labeled ‘Speech’ is for this purpose. You will select the source and target languages.
You will also input the source text and target audio.
How to record an audio
• Tap on the microphone. This will start the recording. You can record a your translation. Note that you should stop the recording when you have finished recording. This allows you to playback your recording and even replace it if you were not satisfied with your previous recording.
View all translations
• To view all translations, you should navigate to Build the Tech → Translations. This will take you to the page where you can see all translations alongside their upvotes and downvotes
• Tap a translation to view its details. This will take you to a new screen. On this screen, you can
upvote, downvote and comment on a translation . A validator can also approve or disapprove on a translation. You can also delete a comment you added on this translation. On this screen, there is the option to edit or delete a translation if you are the author of the translation.
Edit/Delete Translation:
• To edit or delete a translation click on the 3 dots on the top right of the screen. The will display options for you to either delete or edit translation.
Other Useful Features
1. Translation requests: This feature enables translators to select sentences to translate from an already provided list of sentences. As a translator, you can use this feature to make your translation task easier for you. You can access this by clicking on the navigation menu: Build the Tech → Translation Requests
2. Request a Translation: This is the screen where you can add new sentences for translators/volunteers to translate. Any sentence/word added here will be included on the Translation Requests page for translators to use.
3. Your Profile: You can view your profile information and make edits. To view your profile, tap Profile on the navigation menu.
4. Your translation Summary: You can also get a summary of you work by tapping on the Details button in the profiles screen.
5. Dictionary: You can view dictionaries in local langugages by selecting ‘Dictionary’ from the navigation menu. At the moment we have the Ghomala dictionary.
6. View Edit Profile: To make edits to your profile click on the edit button in the profile screen.
On this screen, you can change your personal information and language preference.
There are some features that will soon be available on the app. These features include automatic translation, chatbot and API keys. Anticipate these!
